Tapison Home is the collection that carries our own name, and the idea behind it is simple. One name, and a rug for almost any room you can think of.

It is our own rug collection: woven and handmade, in wool and in polyester, rectangular and round, in sizes from a hallway runner up to 280 by 380 cm. A hallway that needs something narrow and hard-wearing. A living room that wants to feel warm on a winter evening. A dining room where the chairs have to slide. A bedroom you walk into barefoot. It is all in here, and we chose every piece of it ourselves.

Rugs for rooms that get used

A large part of the collection is woven in polyester. This is where most people find what they came for, at prices that do not ask you to think it over for a week. The choice of sizes is the widest we offer. A runner for the hall, the familiar 160 by 230 and 200 by 290 cm, a 200 by 200 cm square. Round rugs from 120 to 240 cm across. And 280 by 380 cm for a room that is genuinely large.

It is not one single texture either. There is a dense low pile of around a centimetre that sits flat under a dining chair and takes a vacuum without complaint. There is a deep shaggy plush of two and a half centimetres that you sink into, finished with knotted tassels. In between sit the plain and mottled designs for a modern interior, and the medallions and florals for a classic one. There is black and white geometry that reads as Scandinavian, and warmer patterned pieces with a boho or vintage feel.

Anti-allergic and antistatic as standard, suitable for underfloor heating, colour stable and straightforward to keep clean. In a house with children, a dog, or both, that matters more than anything else on the label. Our living room rugs and round rugs show how these sizes work in a real room.

Wool, when you want to feel the difference

Alongside those sit the hand-tufted wool rugs. Thicker, softer, warmer underfoot, in a clean geometric register, and in set sizes you can plan a room around: 170 by 230, 200 by 300 and 240 by 340 cm.

Wool holds its shape, recovers from a sofa leg and ages into a rug rather than out of one. For a bedroom or a sitting room where the floor is something you actually touch, this is the part of the collection to start with. You will find them with our hand-tufted rugs.

And a few that exist only once

Part of the collection is handknotted or handwoven, and those rugs behave differently. Some measure 200 by 297 cm, others 81 by 247 cm, because they were finished by hand and then measured rather than cut to a catalogue size.

They are the knotted wool pieces, with medallions and softened vintage colour, and the flatwoven kilims that sit almost level with the floor and go happily under a dining table. There is one of each, and when one is sold there is no second one on a shelf. If you want a rug nobody else has, start with our handknotted rugs.

What our name on a rug means

We have been selling rugs from Willebroek since 1907, and in all that time the work has been the same. We do not design these rugs. We go to the people who make them, we look at a great many, and our name goes on the few that earn it.

What we look at: how it is made, whether the edges will still hold in five years rather than five months, and how the colour behaves in daylight and again under a lamp. A grey that looks warm in a showroom can turn cold in a north facing room. That is the difference between a rug you keep and a rug you replace.

Come and stand on them

The collection is laid out in our showroom in Willebroek, fifteen minutes from Antwerp and half an hour from Brussels. In twenty minutes you can stand on a low woven pile, a deep shaggy plush and a knotted wool rug, and you will know which one is yours. Colour and texture are the two things a screen cannot settle for you, which is why we also send samples to your door before you commit to anything.

Delivery is free across the EU, you have 30 days to change your mind, and our team is on +32 3 886 66 08 if you would rather talk it through first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a handknotted, a hand-tufted and a woven rug?

A handknotted rug is tied knot by knot by hand and takes months, which is why each one is a single piece. A hand-tufted rug has its wool pile punched into a backing by hand, so it is thick and soft but made in standard sizes. A woven rug is made on a loom, which keeps the price down and the size range wide.

Do Tapison Home rugs shed?

The wool rugs lose a little fibre in the first weeks. That is normal for new wool and it settles after a few vacuum sessions. A woven rug with a short pile will not shed.

How do I clean a Tapison Home rug?

Vacuum regularly, and on a deep shaggy pile use suction only without a beater bar. Blot spills straight away rather than rubbing them in. For a full clean use a professional rug cleaner. The care instructions on each product page tell you what applies to that particular rug.

Do I need an anti-slip underlay underneath?

On a hard floor we strongly recommend one. It stops the rug travelling, protects the floor from grit underneath and adds a little cushioning. We sell our own anti-slip underlay in several sizes, so you can order it together with the rug.

Will my furniture leave dents in the pile?

Any pile keeps marks under a sofa leg. A low woven pile springs back quickly, and in a deep shaggy pile you can lift the fibres with your fingers or a soft brush. Shifting heavy furniture a few centimetres now and then prevents a permanent mark.
