Most kilims settle into a quiet background blue. Kilim Cobalt 775 refuses to.
A vivid, saturated cobalt field carries column after column of diamond medallions in burnt orange, violet, mustard and coral, each one built from sharp zigzag patterns that seem to float rather than sit on the surface. Unlike a tightly packed honeycomb grid, the diamonds here have room to breathe, scattered with enough space between them that the blue itself becomes part of the pattern, not just the background to it. At 303 by 203 centimetres, it is the largest piece in the entire kilim collection, and easily the most electric.
A blue this intense rarely survives the dyeing process without losing its punch, but hand-dyeing wool the traditional way, the way it was done for Kilim Cobalt 775 in Afghanistan, keeps the colour saturated all the way through the yarn rather than just on the surface. There is no pile and no separate backing here, just a tight flat weave where the pattern reads almost as clearly from underneath as it does from above.
Given its size and that fearless blue, this rug works best as the one bold decision in an otherwise calm room, paired with simple furniture in wood, linen or leather that lets the colour carry the space rather than compete with it.
Looking after it is straightforward. Shake it out from time to time, vacuum gently without the beater bar, and give it some fresh air outdoors now and then. Treat spills quickly and let it dry flat.
