Collection: Layered Rugs

Layered was founded in Stockholm in 2015 by Malin Glemme, a designer with a background in fashion who set out to find a rug she could not find anywhere: high quality, sustainably made and design-led enough to be treated as a serious interior object. Unable to find it, she designed one herself and had it handwoven in Bhadohi, India, a region with an unbroken tradition of handcraft since the sixteenth century. When the rug was published in a Swedish interior magazine, the purchase requests that followed made the decision for her: Layered was born.

What sets Layered apart from almost every other rug brand is that it is a design label first and a rug manufacturer second. Every collection, every collaboration and every material choice begins with a design question rather than a production question. The result is a brand where named collections have distinct identities, where artist collaborations produce genuinely different objects rather than branded variations, and where the choice between a Röllakan and a Solid Wool is a meaningful aesthetic decision rather than a technical one. Layered produces exclusively in 100% natural or recycled materials: pure new wool, recycled PET, jute, sisal and cotton. The brand has won the Elle Deco Accessory of the Year award and has been covered by The New York Times, Vogue and Homes & Gardens.

Röllakan: Swedish Flatweave Tradition in Contemporary Form

The Röllakan collection takes its name from the Swedish flatweave technique practised in Scandinavia since the early medieval period. Layered's interpretation is handwoven in wool with a cotton warp, producing a surface that lies completely flat, moves freely under furniture and develops a fine patina with use. The collection is organised around named weave designs, Iris, Ruth, Selma and Hilma, each with a distinct character and a curated palette of colourways. For a Scandinavian or restrained interior, the Röllakan is Layered's most resolved option: it brings colour and structure without pile, pattern without loudness.

Solid Wool and Swedish Homage: Colour and Material at the Core

The Solid Wool collection is handwoven in pure wool in a deliberately wide palette, from Bone White and Oatmeal through Blue Clair and Blue Foncé to Ruby Red and Chicory Coffee. These are not background rugs: the colours are considered enough to carry the weight of a room and the construction quality is high enough to last. Swedish Homage is Layered's hand-tufted premium line, Lilly and Johanna in wool, with a tufted surface that holds colour differently from flatweave and produces the visual warmth that larger rooms benefit from.

Teklan: Architecture on the Floor

Teklan is Layered's most architecturally structured collection. The Teklan Frame and Teklan Box designs are hand-tufted in wool with a deliberate tension between the outer field and the interior motif, producing a composition that reads as both contained and expansive. This is the collection that most directly addresses the demand for a rug that functions as a deliberate design decision rather than a floor covering.

Shaggy, Chess and Natural Fibres

The Residue collection is Layered's high-pile shaggy wool line: a flokati construction with a depth of pile that produces a completely different tactile experience from the flatwoven and tufted collections. The Chess flatweave adds a geometric check pattern in wool with the same flat, furniture-friendly construction as the Röllakan but a stronger visual statement. The Jute and Sisal lines, including the Basket Weave and Strata collections, bring natural fibre options suited to rooms that require warmth without weight.

The Artist Series: Collaborations That Produce Real Objects

The Artist Series is the dimension of Layered that has no direct equivalent at any other rug brand. Rather than a single creative direction, Layered invites artists from different fields and backgrounds to produce collections under their own name. Alice Crawley, a British visual artist, produces graphic colour-block compositions in hand-tufted wool that carry the energy of painting. Evelina Kroon, a Scandinavian artist, works in a more architectural register: structured blocks, tonal contrasts and a quieter formal precision. Norwegian designer Erik Bratsberg contributes the Lozza series in handwoven wool in deep petrol and olive tones where the colour shifts with the pile direction. Poppykalas, a Swedish illustrator, brings a playful graphic sensibility to wool constructions that sit between pattern and illustration. Heather Chontos, an American interior designer, adds an organic warmth distinct from the Scandinavian restraint of the rest of the Artist Series.

The Massproductions Cord Collection

The most recent addition to the range is the Cord Collection, a collaboration with Stockholm-based furniture producer Massproductions. Handwoven in wool with the stripe integrated as a structural rather than decorative element, the collection represents a conversation between industrial design logic and the inherent irregularity of handcraft. Available colourways include Black White, Yellow Oatmeal, Burgundy Rust and Blue Brown, in sizes from 75 by 240 cm runner to 300 by 400 cm.
