Green is not a single decision. Olive, sage, moss, forest, emerald, mint: each reads differently in a room, behaves differently in light and suits different furniture, floors and interior styles. The question is never simply whether to choose green, but which green, and in what kind of construction. This page works through both.

The three most searched shades are olive, sage and dark green. Olive is the warmest, with a yellow-brown undertone that sits comfortably alongside wood, linen, terracotta and warm metals. It works in almost every interior style from Japandi to Mediterranean and is the reason it has become the most consistent green choice in premium rug buying. Sage is quieter: grey-green rather than yellow-green, suited to paler and more minimal interiors where you want colour without weight. Dark green, forest and emerald sit at the other end: they have presence, they pair with brass and dark wood and they make a room feel finished rather than decorated. Mint and lighter greens work better in bedrooms and secondary rooms than in main living spaces, where they can feel too cool under evening light.

Botanical Green: Morris & Co, Scion, Harlequin, Sanderson, Orla Kiely and Laura Ashley

The botanical tradition in rug design goes back to William Morris, the Victorian designer who in the 1860s established the visual language that still defines how pattern draws from the natural world. Morris & Co carries that legacy directly: Acanthus, Bower, Bluebell and Bird all bring dense botanical illustration into flatwoven and hand-tufted constructions, with greens that range from deep forest to lighter vine. Scion approaches the same nature-referencing tradition with a younger, more graphic energy: bold outline, clean contrast and a palette that works confidently in contemporary interiors. Harlequin works in a bolder register still, with Elliptic in Emerald among the strongest single-colour botanical statements in the current premium market. Sanderson's Forest Green collections, Robin's Wood and Ancient Canopy, treat botanical pattern with the restraint of a heritage brand that has been doing this for over a century. Orla Kiely takes a different route: Linear Stem and Sycamore Dill use the geometric reduction of a botanical motif rather than its literal reproduction, resulting in a pattern that is immediately recognisable but entirely modern. Laura Ashley's Fern collections bring an English country garden sensibility in tones that sit closest to the softer, greyer end of the olive-to-sage spectrum.

Plain Olive Green: Perletta

Plain green done well is harder to find than patterned green. The market is full of solid green rugs in synthetic pile that photograph well and flatten within a year. Perletta is the opposite: handwoven in pure wool to order in Morocco, in constructions including Limone, Bellamy and Finesse that have enough surface variation to hold visual interest without ever resorting to pattern. Olive 448 is the most-requested green colourway in the Perletta range: warm, deep and consistent under both daylight and artificial light. Because every Perletta rug is made to order, it is also available in any dimension that fits the room rather than the nearest standard format. For a living room where the rug needs to anchor the space without competing with furniture or art, this is the most intelligent way to use green.

Design Green: Marimekko and Louis de Poortere

Marimekko's Unikko design in Dark Green is a different kind of green entirely: graphic, confident and Scandinavian in a way that has nothing to do with the British botanical tradition. It belongs in rooms with strong design decisions already in place, where the rug complements a wider visual argument rather than starting one. Louis de Poortere's Meditation Drop Green moves in a tonal direction: colour transitions from a richer forest centre to a softer, almost misty edge that creates movement without pattern. For Scandinavian or minimalist interiors that want green as atmosphere rather than statement, the LdP Meditation and Structures Baobab Perrier's Green are the most considered options at their price point.

Washable and Outdoor Green

Louis de Poortere's green collections across Meditation, Structures, Gallery and the 2026 Ecorugs expansion are produced in recycled PET, making them machine-washable and suitable for outdoor use on terraces, patios and covered balconies. No other green rug brand at this quality level offers both. The flat construction works efficiently over underfloor heating without building thermal resistance.

The full green rug collection, botanical, plain, graphic, washable and outdoor, is available to explore in our rug shop and showroom in Willebroek, in the Antwerp region, easily accessible from Antwerp, Brussels, Mechelen and Sint-Niklaas. Free EU delivery on all orders.

Frequently asked questions

Which shade of green works best in a living room?

Olive green is the most versatile choice for a living room: its yellow-brown undertone works alongside wood, linen, terracotta and warm metals without dominating the space. In a larger room or a room with strong architectural detail, dark green or forest green brings more visual weight and pairs well with brass, dark wood and leather. Sage and softer greens work better in bedrooms or quieter spaces where the light is paler. If the living room is north-facing or receives limited natural light, avoid mint and cool greens, which can read as flat rather than fresh.

What is the difference between olive green, sage green and moss green?

Olive green has a warm yellow-brown undertone: it reads as earthy, grounded and warm, and sits comfortably with natural materials. Sage green is cooler and greyer: it belongs closer to the grey-green part of the spectrum and suits minimal, paler interiors where warmth is not the primary aim. Moss green sits between the two: less yellow than olive, less grey than sage, with a slightly muted quality that reads as quiet and natural rather than bold. All three are significantly more liveable over time than brighter or more saturated greens.

Are there washable green rugs in a premium quality?

Yes. Louis de Poortere's Meditation, Structures and Gallery collections in green are machine-washable, produced in recycled PET and also suitable for outdoor use. This combination of washability, outdoor suitability and premium Belgian design is unique in the market. No comparable green rug brand offers all three at this level. The Perletta range in olive and other green tones is handwoven in wool and is not machine-washable, but it is built for long-term durability in normal household conditions.

Can I use a green rug outdoors?

Louis de Poortere's green Ecorugs collections are specifically designed for both indoor and covered outdoor use. They are produced in recycled PET, which is UV-resistant and weatherproof, and their flat construction handles the transition between inside and outside without buckling or deteriorating. They are also machine-washable, which makes maintenance straightforward after seasonal outdoor use. Other green rugs in the collection, including Perletta wool and the botanical design ranges, are for indoor use only.

Which green rug works in a Japandi or Scandinavian interior?

Olive green and sage green are the two tones that work most naturally in Japandi and Scandinavian interiors, where the palette leans toward natural, muted and low-saturation. Perletta in Olive 448, handwoven in pure wool, is the right material choice for a Japandi space: the texture is natural rather than glossy and the colour is warm without being dominant. Louis de Poortere's Meditation Drop Green, with its tonal forest-to-mist transition, suits the atmosphere-over-statement approach of Scandinavian design. Marimekko's Unikko in Dark Green works in a Scandinavian interior that has already committed to bold graphic choices.
