The border arrives before the rest of the rug does. A dense, busy band of small diamonds in yellow, orange, pink and violet runs the full perimeter of Kilim Petrol 149773, and only once your eye adjusts does the calmer centre reveal itself.
There, against a deep petrol blue ground, a single column of honeycomb medallions stacks from top to bottom, each one its own small composition of coral, ochre, lilac and pale blue. No two medallions share quite the same palette, which is what keeps a pattern this structured from ever feeling mechanical. The contrast between that quiet blue field and the lively border is the whole personality of this piece, restraint and exuberance sharing one rug.
Every shift in colour was a decision made at the loom, not a print laid over fabric afterwards. Kilim Petrol 149773 is woven entirely by hand in Afghanistan from 100% wool, with no pile and no separate backing, just weft and warp built up together until the colour runs all the way through. Fold a corner over and the underside carries the same precision as the front.
At 252 by 178 centimetres it suits a room confident enough to let petrol blue lead, paired with warm wood, brass details, or even a sofa in a similarly saturated colour rather than something too neutral to keep up with it.
Treat it gently and it asks little in return. Shake it out now and then, vacuum without the beater bar, and give it the occasional airing outdoors. Lift spills as soon as they happen and let the rug dry completely flat.
