Two weathers meeting. The lower half of this Torino glows in amber and burnt gold, warm as late afternoon light on a plastered wall, while the upper half cools into petrol blue and smoky grey. Where they meet, neither wins. The gold breaks up into flecks that drift into the blue and the blue seeps back down in soft, corroded patches, like oxidised copper or a wall that has been painted over many times.

There is no pattern to speak of and that is the appeal. The whole surface is built from fine vertical striations in the yarn, so the colour shifts constantly as you cross the room or as the daylight changes. Up close the texture reads almost like brushed metal. The pile is short and dense with a quiet lustre, and the edge is bound in a deep chocolate brown that frames the colour without interrupting it.

Set it against dark wood, brushed brass, aged leather or a deep green wall and it looks unmistakably considered. It suits rooms with some character to them, where a plain neutral would feel like a missed opportunity.

Woven in Belgium from 100 percent polyester, which keeps these saturated tones stable in daylight and lets the pile recover well from furniture and footfall. Vacuum regularly without an aggressive brush setting, blot spills immediately using a clean cloth and lukewarm water rather than rubbing, and rotate the rug from time to time. On screen the blue tends to flatten, so the depth of colour is best judged in person.
