New Harlequin Rugs: Drawn, Painted and Tufted

You may know Harlequin from a wallpaper or a curtain fabric. The British design house has been known for decades for expressive pattern and colour with nerve. Fewer people know that the same designs exist as rugs, hand tufted in wool. This autumn new rugs join the range, and two of them, Sedimentary and Monolith, come straight from the house's latest collection of wallpapers and fabrics.

Landscapes to Walk On

Sedimentary starts from an old artwork in the archive: a painted landscape in layers, like the strata in a rock face. In Pine the colour climbs from deep pine green at the foot to a pale mist at the top. Midnight runs from sand and misty grey to inky blue. Because the rug moves from light to dark, it has a direction. Put the dark end under the sofa and the seating area is anchored at once.

Saltillo began as a watercolour of a Mexican landscape, with cacti and succulents running into one another. Forest is fresh, in sage, sea green and moss with a touch of cinnamon. Rosewood is the sunset: terracotta and rust melting into lilac and dove grey. With its soft sheen, Saltillo belongs in a bedroom or a quiet sitting room.

Drawn by Hand

Hollow looks as if it was drawn in one long line. Loops and meanders wander across the rug like the paths of a maze, and those lines lie in a different texture from the pile around them, so you can feel the pattern too. There is a calm version in ivory with greige and a warm one in caramel and old gold.

Frescoes was drawn in the Harlequin studio with oil pastels on suede. Hundreds of short dashes in amber, rust, wine red and teal line up in rows and arcs on an ivory ground. Frescoes Amber has a lower pile of 11 mm, which helps under a dining table or near a door.

Zeal is the painted stripe, in broad and thin brushstrokes on an ivory ground. It is among our most chosen Harlequin rugs and now also comes in forest green, fern and moss, in petrol and sky blue with ochre and in chocolate, mocha and blush.

Blocks and Arcs

Monolith stacks blocks of colour the way a walker balances stones on a beach. The result is an irregular check on a large scale. Cinnabar Amber brings burnt orange, wine red and mauve together with cream and denim blue. Sandstone keeps to sage grey, stone, sand and ivory.

Atelier is inspired by a vintage scarf from the 1970s: sweeping arcs, half moons and a zigzag border. Lagoon sets them in bottle green, sea green and sky blue. Pebble takes the colour away and lets the drawing speak, in stone, taupe and chalk white.

Sizes, Runners and Made to Measure

The new Harlequin rugs are hand tufted in India, most of them in pure new wool, with a pile of 17 mm. They come in 140 x 200 cm, 170 x 240 cm, 200 x 280 cm and 250 x 350 cm. Hollow, Sedimentary, Zeal and Monolith are also available as runners, in 70 x 245 cm and 80 x 300 cm, for the hallway or alongside the bed.

If none of those sizes fits your room, every design can be made to measure. For a seating area with a three seater sofa and armchairs, 200 x 280 cm is a good size. When in doubt, take the larger one.

The Rest of the Harlequin Collection

Alongside the newcomers you will also find familiar designs such as Rosita, Rhythm and Floreale, and rugs for indoors and outdoors such as Melodic and Tree Tops. Everything is under Harlequin rugs.

Colour is hard to judge on a screen. At our rug shop and showroom in Willebroek, in the Antwerp region, easily accessible from Antwerp, Brussels, Mechelen and Sint-Niklaas, we will gladly help you choose.
