Harlequin Saltillo Rosewood is a desert at sunset. Terracotta, burnt sienna and rust run into lilac, heather and dove grey, with one pale yellow line cutting through like the last light on a ridge. The cacti and succulents of the original watercolour are still there if you look for them.
Colour this warm is best met with calm. White curtains, a pale floor and walnut panelling let the rug do the talking, and a bedspread in ochre or mustard ties in beautifully. It is a natural choice at the foot of a bed, where bare feet can enjoy the soft, slightly lustrous pile.
Saltillo is tufted by hand in India in a blend of 60% pure new wool and 40% viscose, 17 mm deep, on cotton and latex. It works over underfloor heating and can be ordered in a special size. Viscose does not like moisture, which makes this a rug for a bedroom or a quiet sitting room. Keep liquids away where you can, blot accidents at once with a dry cloth, never rub, and vacuum without a rotating brush.
