Harlequin Frescoes Amber was drawn in the studio with oil pastels on a suede ground, and it still looks like it. Hundreds of short dashes in amber, rust, wine red, teal and soft grey line up in rows and sweep round in arcs across an ivory field.

From across the room it reads as a light rug with a confetti of colour, and from close by every mark has the wobble of a hand. That makes it a cheerful base for strong furniture: cobalt blue chairs, pale timber, a brass lamp. It also forgives crumbs and daily life better than a plain cream rug would.

Frescoes is hand tufted in India in 100% pure new wool, with a low pile of 11 mm on a cotton and latex backing, so doors and chair legs pass over it easily. It is compatible with underfloor heating and available made to measure. Slight variations between pieces are part of handwork. Vacuum weekly on a gentle setting and blot anything spilled with a clean white cloth.
