Teal over chocolate brown, with a few sparks of ochre caught in between. The Tapison Home Torino 063.0078.3249 has the colouring of old copper turning to verdigris, muted and layered, with a richness that shows itself slowly.

It suits rooms that lean warm and natural. Think cognac leather, a walnut sideboard, linen curtains in sand or olive, a wall in deep green. On a pale floor the rug gives the seating area a clear anchor, while on dark wood it settles in and lets the furniture take the lead.

Look closely and the colour turns out to be a blend rather than a single tone. Blue and brown yarns run through each other, fine lines follow the length of this Torino and small ochre flecks surface here and there. The low pile is dense and soft, framed by a neat dark brown bound edge.

It is machine woven in Belgium from polyester, a yarn that keeps its colour in daylight and handles everyday family life without fuss. A regular vacuum keeps it fresh. Blot spills quickly with a damp cloth and give the rug a turn every few months.

Mixed tones like these change with the light, so seeing one in person helps.
