Rust, ochre and stormy blue: the colours of oxidised metal and autumn light. The Tapison Home Torino 063.0934.7270 sets warm terracotta and gold against cool grey blue and deep brown, and the contrast is what gives this rug its energy.

Stand back and it reads like an abstract painting or a slab of weathered slate. Come closer and you see that the layers are real. Lines cut into the low, dense pile separate one colour field from the next, so the design has depth you can feel with your fingertips.

It is a rug that likes character. Cognac leather, walnut, black steel and exposed brick all bring out the rust tones, while a grey or dark blue sofa picks up the cooler side. In a neutral room one piece like this is enough: let it be the artwork and keep the rest calm.

Three shapes are available. The rectangular sizes anchor a seating area or dining table, the round version suits a corner or a round table, and the organic pebble shape underlines the natural, stone-like look of the design.

The Torino is machine woven in Belgium from polyester. It is colourfast, suitable for underfloor heating and easy to live with: vacuum regularly, blot spills immediately with a damp cloth rather than rubbing, and turn the rug now and then for even wear.
