Modern is the broadest word in rug design. It means, simply, not traditional: not Persian, not Oriental, not country, not antique. Within that definition, the range is enormous: from a flat-woven recycled PET rug in geometric Berber pattern to a hand-tufted Stockholm design in saturated single-colour wool. Three questions narrow the field quickly: which design, which material, and which room. This collection covers all three directions.

Design: from restrained to expressive

The most restrained modern rugs are the ones that do least. A plain or tone-on-tone construction in neutral wool, a gradation that shifts from one depth of colour to another, a surface with enough texture to be interesting and enough calm to disappear into the room: these are rugs that support everything else without competing with it. The Acsento Caligari in handwoven wool and the Layered Solid Wool series in single saturated tones belong here. So do the Louis de Poortere Meditation Coral constructions, which move across an abstract tonal field in flat-woven recycled PET.

Geometric modern rugs bring pattern back in a controlled register. The Louis de Poortere Berber collections, Ksar, Caidal, Oasis and Erg, take Berber geometric motifs and render them in flat-woven PET: traditional source material, contemporary construction, entirely practical result. The Layered Teklan series handles geometry differently: architectural, precise and hand-tufted in wool. The Acsento Chiara brings viscose and wool into a structured geometric construction that catches light differently depending on the angle.

Abstract and expressive modern rugs make no attempt at restraint. The Acsento Panarea in hand-tufted wool, the Layered Alice Crawley stripe collaborations, the Louis de Poortere Craft Ribbon in flat-woven PET: these are rugs where colour and movement are the point. They work in rooms that can absorb a visual statement, and they tend to work best as the only strong element on the floor.

Organic shapes and round rugs

The clearest shift in contemporary rug design is the move away from strictly rectangular formats toward organic and round shapes. The reasoning is architectural: in a room full of straight-edged furniture, a rug that echoes natural form rather than geometric precision introduces a counterpoint that reduces visual hardness without adding pattern. The Acsento Piana is a hand-tufted wool rug in a free stone-inspired shape, available in off-white, dark beige and sage green. It has the weight of a serious rug and the form of something found rather than designed. Round rugs in the modern collection, including the Acsento Figari and the Louis de Poortere Berber in circular format, serve the same purpose with more geometric resolution.

Material determines longevity

The word modern describes a design direction, not a material or a construction standard. Two rugs can share the same contemporary aesthetic and perform entirely differently over five years. Hand-tufted wool, as in the Acsento Figari, Palau, Lipari and Panarea series, compresses slowly under furniture, cleans well with low moisture and holds colour over decades of normal use. Handwoven wool in the Layered and Acsento Caligari constructions is denser still and develops a richer surface with age. Flat-woven recycled PET, as in the full Louis de Poortere range, is machine washable, suitable for outdoor use on covered terraces and compatible with underfloor heating without thermal resistance. Woven polyester and microfibre constructions, such as the Acsento Tara Deluxe and Jura series, are the most accessible entry point: practical, widely available and straightforward to maintain, though they compress more readily under heavy use than wool. The right material is determined by the room, the household and the expected lifespan of the rug in that space.

Louis de Poortere and Acsento: modern with purpose

Louis de Poortere has woven since 1858. Its modern collections, Berber, Meditation, Craft Ribbon and Fading World, are produced on Jacquard looms in recycled PET: a construction that delivers pattern precision no hand process can match at scale, in a material that is fully washable and outdoor-compatible. The Berber collections show what this approach does well: a pattern with centuries of history, executed in a contemporary material with full practical functionality. Acsento produces in India with a range that spans hand-tufted wool at mid-to-premium level through to accessible woven polyester. The breadth of that range, from a handtufted Panarea in wool to a practical Tara Deluxe, makes it the most represented brand in the modern collection by design variety.

Living room, bedroom and dining room

In the living room, a modern rug in a size that allows the front legs of all seating to rest on it anchors the space most effectively. Low to mid pile handles daily foot traffic without flattening, while flatweave in PET or wool sits flush with the floor and works over underfloor heating. In the bedroom, a higher pile beside the bed provides warmth and texture where it is most felt. Abstract and expressive designs often work better in the bedroom, where the rug is seen from one direction rather than from across the room. In the dining room, flatweave or low pile handles chair movement without snagging, cleans more easily after meals and maintains its surface under sustained use.
