Three rectangles, each a different size, slide over one another on a field of cool grey taupe. That is all the pattern Senso Planes Soft Taupe needs. The outlines are not printed or dyed but woven as a fine raised line, so they appear and fade as you walk around the rug. The colour sits between grey and beige, a true greige with lighter flecks in the yarn, and the flat weave feels firm and slightly grainy under bare feet.

Greige is the great mediator in an interior. On a concrete or pale resin floor this rug softens the room, next to chrome, glass and woven cane it adds the warmth those materials lack. Try it under a light grey sofa with a low stone coffee table, and let the off centre drawing peek out from under the furniture. The result is modern and architectural, quiet enough for a minimalist home yet never cold.

At about 6 mm this is a very thin rug, and that has practical advantages: doors open over it, chairs slide easily and it works well under a dining table. It is flatwoven by hand in India from 100% pure new wool and has no backing, so place a non slip underlay beneath it on tiles, parquet or laminate. Underfloor heating is no problem. Vacuum with a smooth nozzle and blot any spill at once with a clean dry cloth, without rubbing.
