When 200x300cm is no longer enough.
A large rug is not simply a bigger version of a standard rug. It is a different category of purchase that responds to a different set of room conditions: a corner sofa that a 200 by 300 cm format cannot anchor, a dining table for six or eight where proper chair clearance requires substantially more surface, or an open plan space where the floor covering needs to define a zone without the assistance of walls. The formats in this collection run from 250 by 300 cm upwards to 300 by 400 cm and larger.
Living Room: Corner Sofas and Larger Configurations
The clearest signal that a larger format is needed in a living room is a corner sofa or L-shaped configuration. A standard 200 by 300 cm rug fits a three-seater sofa with two armchairs in a linear arrangement; it will not cover the full footprint of a corner sofa, where the return section extends the seating by 150 to 200 cm. For a corner sofa, a minimum of 250 by 300 cm is required for the front legs of all seating elements to rest on the surface. For a large L-shaped configuration, 300 by 400 cm may be more appropriate. The rule remains the same regardless of size: the rug must always be wider than the longest side of the sofa configuration it anchors.
Dining Room: Six and Eight Person Tables
For dining rooms, a six-person table of 180 by 90 cm requires a minimum of 240 by 340 cm, with 50 to 75 cm of clearance per chair on all sides as the correct standard. An eight-person table of 220 by 100 cm requires 300 by 400 cm or larger to maintain that clearance comfortably. The most common error in dining room rug selection is underestimating the chair footprint when chairs are occupied and pulled back. Tape the exact dimensions on the floor before ordering, and test by sitting in chairs on the tape boundary rather than standing above it.
Open Plan Spaces
In open plan spaces, where a living area, dining area and kitchen share a continuous floor without room divisions to define zones, a large format rug is the primary architectural tool available to establish visual separation. A 250 by 300 cm or 300 by 400 cm rug under the seating area creates an anchor point that reads as a room within a room, making a large open plan feel intentional rather than undivided. The scale of the rug relative to the ceiling height matters: open plan spaces with high ceilings can absorb a 300 by 400 cm rug without it feeling heavy; rooms with lower ceilings may read a format that large as dominating rather than anchoring.
Materials and Pile Height at Large Formats
At large formats, the choice of material and pile height has a greater effect on the room than at smaller sizes. Wool rugs at 300 by 400 cm from Perletta, Brink & Campman and Louis de Poortere are the most durable choice for large living room configurations where furniture is moved periodically and foot traffic is sustained. Low-pile and flatweave constructions handle underfloor heating at large formats and allow furniture legs to sit level; high-pile constructions add acoustic warmth but can cause furniture to sit unevenly over time. Washable rugs at these sizes are well suited to open plan dining configurations. Outdoor rugs in large formats extend the same design language to generous terraces and covered external dining areas.
Round Rugs at Large Scale
Round rugs from 200 cm diameter are a strong alternative for open plan spaces or large square rooms where a rectangular format creates too strong a directional axis. A large round rug under a circular dining table or in the centre of a square living area produces a considered, composed result that a rectangle cannot replicate.
Large Rugs for the Bedroom
In large bedrooms, a 250 by 300 cm or 300 by 400 cm format placed under the bed and extending on three sides works for king-size and super-king configurations where a 200 by 300 cm format would leave the sides of the bed without floor coverage.
