Blue Lake was inspired by a mirror still lake in northern France that Heather Chontos passed every day during a time of personal change. The original was painted on linen, and the rug captures its calm: layers of cornflower, denim and deep navy flow across an ivory ground, with soft grey shapes and thin white lines like reflections on the water.

Blue brings a sense of space and quiet to a room. Let the rug ground a rustic dining room with an old wooden table and white chairs, or set it in front of a wood stove with a leather armchair and a log side table. 250 x 350 cm carries a dining table for six, 200 x 300 cm suits a living room with a sofa and coffee table.

Hand knotted in Bhadohi, India, from 100% New Zealand wool, with a generous pile of about 25 mm, and suitable for underfloor heating. Advanced dyeing techniques recreate the depth and colour variation of the original paintings. Handwork means small variations in size and tone. New wool sheds a little at first, which fades over time. Vacuum without a brush and treat stains with lukewarm water and a little soap, then absorb the moisture with a dry microfibre cloth. For a deep clean, choose professional flat washing.
