Look closely at Senso Border Fur Brown and you see how much life there is in a single colour. The camel brown yarn is spun as a mélange, so lighter and darker fibres alternate and the surface gets a warm, slightly speckled depth. Three frames, each smaller than the last, are woven into it as a raised cord of the same light brown. The border is a familiar motif, here reduced to a relief you can trace with your hand.

This brown asks for natural materials with character. A block of weathered oak as a side table, a black metal tray, a concrete pillar or a clay plastered wall: the rug ties them together and takes the chill off a light grey floor. In the living room, place the sofa so that its front legs stand inside the outer frame, which makes seating and rug read as one. Linen in ecru and a touch of olive green finish the palette.

Made in India, woven flat by hand and entirely of pure new wool: the construction is as honest as the design. With a height of around 6 mm the rug stays low, so it fits under doors and suits a dining area as well as a living room or bedroom. It may be laid on underfloor heating. There is no backing, so use a non slip underlay on smooth floors. For upkeep a vacuum cleaner with a smooth nozzle is enough, and a spill is best blotted with a dry cloth.
