Soft is the first word that comes to mind. Decor Pilar Blush brings together dusty pink, cream and a gentle greige in vertical stripes of changing width, all close enough in tone to melt into one another. Two horizontal breaks split the rug into three bands. In the centre band the pink and the pale shades swap, a quiet shift you notice only on a second look. The wool pile is cut short and even, with a velvety touch.

Because the contrast is so low, this rug settles into a room without asking for attention. It is lovely on a polished concrete or light grey floor, where the pink takes the chill off, and equally at home beside warm oak or walnut cabinetry. Think of a bedroom with linen bedding in natural shades, or a dining area with curved chairs and a slim wooden table. The mood is modern and serene, with a faint echo of the seventies.

Brink & Campman has this design hand tufted in India, in 100% pure new wool on a cotton and latex backing. The cut pile measures 17 mm, deep enough to feel comfortable under bare feet. Underfloor heating is no problem, and a made to measure version is possible on request. Expect some loose fibres at first, as with every new wool rug. Regular vacuuming with a smooth nozzle, without a rotating brush, soon puts an end to it.
