Start with the Room
In the living room, a rug anchors the seating arrangement and gives the room its sense of scale. Go larger than feels comfortable on paper: a rug that sits only beneath the coffee table without catching at least the front legs of the sofa is too small and will look it. In the bedroom, soft pile and calm colour are the priorities. In the kitchen, low pile and washability come first. The dining room requires a format large enough that chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. Outdoor rugs need weather-resistant construction that handles moisture and UV without fading across seasons.
Choose the Right Material
At the accessible end, machine-made polypropylene and polyester rugs offer durability, stain resistance and a wide design range at an honest price. They are a sensible first rug for a new home, a busy family space, or any room that sees heavy use. Washable constructions in cotton or synthetic fibres take this further: Lorena Canals, for example, produces organic cotton rugs that machine-wash at 30 degrees without losing colour or shape.
Wool is the benchmark material for quality rugs. It compresses underfoot and recovers, regulates temperature, resists surface soiling and ages well. The finest constructions are handwoven in wool, where the surface changes with the light and the quality improves with time rather than declining.

Round rugs work well beneath a single chair, in an entrance hall, or as a counterpoint to a room of straight lines. Oversized formats from 250 x 350 cm upwards suit open-plan spaces where a standard size simply disappears. Runners address long, narrow zones in hallways, kitchens and alongside beds.
