Borage began in 1883 as a furnishing fabric by William Morris, a tight weave of small flowers mirrored along several axes. Morris & Co Borage Grey sets that pattern in stone grey, ivory and soft ochre on a dark charcoal field, then surrounds it with a pale border edged by a fine line of terracotta.

Grey this layered is anything but cool. It sits naturally beside worn leather, linen and old pine, and it gives a white room with tall windows a centre without adding a loud colour. From a distance the pattern settles into a calm texture, and up close you keep finding new flowers.

The rug is knotted by hand in Nepal, in 100% pure new wool on a cotton foundation. The pile is 12 mm high, dense and even, and it can be laid over underfloor heating. As with every knotted rug, the size may differ by a few centimetres and the shade can vary from piece to piece. A weekly vacuum with a smooth nozzle keeps it fresh, and anything spilled should be dabbed up at once.
