Warm grey with a soft taupe tint is one of the easiest colours to build a room around, and Atoll Grey, a grey hand tufted wool rug, makes the most of it. Its calm field is crossed by a few swaying lines, like water stirred by a light breeze, and they shift subtly as the daylight moves. The low pile has a firm, velvety touch and keeps a neat profile under chair legs.

Pair it with a bouclé armchair, a smoked oak sideboard and a sofa in stone coloured fabric, and everything falls into place. The rug bridges warm and cool materials, so it sits as comfortably beside black metal and concrete as beside walnut and wool throws. Atoll is made in India, tufted by hand from 100% natural European wool, with fringes along two opposite sides. You can lay it on underfloor heating without concern. Small irregularities in dimensions and hue are the signature of handwork, not a flaw. Vacuum with a plain nozzle or with the rotating brush turned off, and expect some loose fibres at first, since fresh wool always releases a bit of fluff.
