200 x 300 cm is the size people ask for most, and for good reason. It carries a three-seater and a coffee table with room to spare, it sits under a dining table with the chairs still on it, and it is the point at which a rug stops being decoration and starts holding a room together.

It is also where our collection is deepest. Hand-tufted and handwoven wool, Belgian flatweaves, soft modern pile, and designs that run from quiet tonal to the boldest thing in the room. Whatever you are looking for, it exists in this size.

We have been choosing rugs since 1907. Free EU delivery on every order, and in our showroom near Antwerp you can stand on one at full size before you decide.

The Room a 200 x 300 Is Made For

A 200 x 300 is at its best in a room of about 300 x 400 cm or more. That leaves roughly 50 cm of floor visible on every side, which is the border that makes a rug look placed rather than fitted.

In a slightly smaller room it still works beautifully, it simply sits closer to the walls and the room reads cosier. That is a choice, not a compromise, and plenty of people prefer it.

If you want to be certain before you order, mark it out. Put painter's tape on the floor at 200 by 300 and live with it for a day. It costs nothing and you will know within the hour.

Under a Seating Group

This is where 200 x 300 earns its reputation.

The rule worth knowing is the front legs. Every seat that belongs to the group, the sofa and the armchairs, should have its front legs on the rug. That is what binds the furniture into one arrangement rather than leaving it floating around something in the middle.

A three-seater is usually 200 to 230 cm wide. Set it along the long side with its front legs on, and you still have a good two metres of rug for the coffee table and the space in front of it. That is the classic living room layout and this is the size it was drawn for.

With an L-shaped corner sofa, measure the footprint of the whole L rather than the longest side. Corner sofas often want the size above.

Under a Dining Table

Most rugs this size end up in a dining room, and here the measurement is exact.

Allow 60 cm of rug beyond the table on every side. That is what a chair needs to push back and sit down again with all four legs still on the rug.

That makes a 200 x 300 right for a table of up to about 180 x 80 cm with six chairs, which is the most common dining table there is. Above that, or for a table that extends, take the size up.

A flat or low construction is the one to choose here. Chairs glide across it, it stays put under the table, and it keeps its look under daily use.

In a Bedroom

The quietest use of this size, and a very good one.

Laid crossways under a double bed, a 200 x 300 gives you warm floor on both sides and at the foot, with the rug starting about a third of the way down the bed. Under a 160 cm bed that leaves around 70 cm of rug on each side, which is exactly where your feet land in the morning.

A bedroom takes almost no traffic, so this is the room where you can choose the softest thing you fall for rather than the hardest wearing. Deep wool pile is at its most enjoyable here.

200 x 280 and 200 x 290 Are the Same Rug

Worth thirty seconds, because it stops people from buying the rug they actually want.

Mills weave to their own loom widths. Belgian and Dutch machine-woven ranges often finish at 200 x 290, hand-made ranges at 200 x 280, and many brands round to 200 x 300. Ten or twenty centimetres over three metres disappears the moment the furniture is on it.

So if you love a design and the label says 290, take it. You will never see the difference. And if your room is so tight that ten centimetres genuinely decides it, that is the room for a made-to-measure rug rather than a standard size.

What a Rug This Size Is Made Of

At 200 x 300 you are choosing a piece of furniture, and the construction is what you feel every day.

Most of what we carry in this size is wool, and a large part of it is made by hand. A hand-tufted wool rug has depth and weight to it, holds colour beautifully and takes years of a living room without flattening. Handwoven and flatwoven pieces sit lower, feel crisper and are the ones to choose under a dining table or in a room that sees a lot of coming and going.

Alongside those there are Belgian flatweaves in recycled fibre that are as at home on a covered terrace as in a kitchen, and softer modern qualities for a bedroom. Every construction we sell exists in this size, which is not true of the sizes above and below it.

When to Size Up or Have One Made

Two situations where a different size is the better rug, and it is worth knowing before you choose.

Go up to 250 x 350 if your seating is a corner sofa, if the living room is open-plan, or if the dining table is 200 cm or longer. In a large space a 200 x 300 reads as an island rather than a floor.

Go down to 160 x 230 if the rug sits in front of the sofa rather than under it, or if you want to define a reading corner inside a bigger room.

And if your room falls between the two, have it made. A large part of the collection is available made to measure, in any width up to 400 cm and any length, which is often the right answer for a long living room where no standard size quite lands.

Order online with free EU delivery, or come and see us in our rug shop and showroom in Willebroek, in the Antwerp region, easily reached from Antwerp, Brussels, Mechelen and Sint-Niklaas. Bring the measurements of the room and of your sofa or dining table, and we will tell you whether 200 x 300 is your size.

Frequently asked questions

How big a room do you need for a 200 x 300 rug?

About 300 x 400 cm or more shows it at its best, leaving roughly 50 cm of floor visible on every side. In a slightly smaller room it still works well, it simply sits closer to the walls and the room reads cosier.

Is a 200 x 300 rug big enough for a dining table?

For a table of up to about 180 x 80 cm with six chairs, yes. Allow 60 cm of rug beyond the table on every side, which is what a chair needs to push back and sit down again with all four legs on the rug. A longer or extending table takes the size up.

What is the difference between 200 x 300, 200 x 290 and 200 x 280?

Only the loom. Mills weave to their own widths, so Belgian and Dutch machine-woven ranges often finish at 200 x 290 and hand-made ranges at 200 x 280. Ten or twenty centimetres over three metres disappears once the furniture is on it.

Should the sofa stand on the rug?

The front legs of every seat in the group belong on it, armchairs included. That is what binds the furniture into one arrangement. With an L-shaped corner sofa, measure the footprint of the whole L, because corner sofas often want the size above.

Does a 200 x 300 rug fit in a bedroom?

Very well. Laid crossways under a double bed it gives warm floor on both sides and at the foot, starting about a third of the way down the bed. Under a 160 cm bed that leaves around 70 cm of rug on each side.
