Walthamstow was adapted from an archival carpet artwork found at The Huntington in California. Morris & Co Walthamstow Forest Teal shows honeysuckles in coral red, small daisies and swirling acanthus leaves in teal blue and old gold on a ground of forest green, closed off by a narrow checkerboard border in ivory.
The colours are those of a wood in late summer, deep and quiet. Between two armchairs by a window, with heavy curtains and oak furniture, the rug turns a corner into a reading room. The wide side panels give it the look of a classic carpet, which helps it sit well in long rooms.
It is hand tufted in India, in 100% pure new wool on a cotton and latex backing, with a pile of 17 mm that muffles sound and feels warm underfoot. Made to measure is available, and the rug is compatible with underfloor heating. Small variations in colour are normal in handwork. Go over it with a vacuum cleaner without a brush head, more often in the first weeks while the wool settles, and dab at spills with a dry cloth.
