J. H. Dearle designed Helena in 1891, at a time when he was studying the textiles of Persia and Turkey closely. You can see it in the rhythm: large artichoke flowers in lavender blue rise in ordered rows from a thicket of acanthus leaves in sea green and sage, with small fritillaries in ivory between them.

Morris & Co Helena Mineral is cool and fresh, the colour of a garden just after rain. Under a dining table by a window it brings the green outside into the room, and it flatters honey coloured wood and natural linen. The leafy border holds the whole design together like a frame around a painting.

Knotted by hand in Nepal, Helena is made of 100% pure new wool on a cotton foundation and has a pile of 12 mm. That low, dense surface lets chairs move easily and is fine with underfloor heating. No two hand knotted rugs are the same, so allow for small variations in dimensions and colour. Vacuum gently in the direction of the pile and treat spills immediately with a dry white cloth.
