A runner is the rug for the places a normal rug does not fit. A hallway, the strip in front of the kitchen cupboards, the floor beside a bed. Long, narrow, and the one format that turns leftover floor into a part of the house you actually enjoy.

It is also the format people get wrong most often, almost always by buying too short. A runner that stops halfway down a corridor makes the corridor look shorter, not longer.

We have been choosing rugs since 1907. Free EU delivery on every order, and in our showroom near Antwerp you can walk the length of one before you decide.

What Size Runner Do You Need

Three measurements settle it, and you can take them in a minute.

Width first. Measure the narrowest point of the corridor and leave 10 to 15 cm of bare floor on each side. In a hallway of 100 to 110 cm that puts you at a 70 cm runner. In one of 110 to 130 cm, an 80 cm runner is right. Anything wider than 130 cm and you are no longer choosing a runner but a rectangular rug.

Length next. Measure the full run and take 20 to 25 cm off each end. Stopping short of both walls is what makes a corridor read longer; running the rug right up to the skirting makes it read like fitted carpet that came up short. The common lengths are 130, 150, 160, 200, 230, 250 and 300 cm, and above that you are into made to measure.

Doors last. A runner should clear the swing of every door that opens onto it. Hold a door open over the intended line and look at the gap underneath before you commit to a pile height.

If the length you want does not exist in the design you want, it can usually still be made. A large part of what we sell is available made to measure, in any width up to 400 cm and any length at all.

The Hallway

The hallway is what most people come here for, and it is the room with the least margin for error.

A hallway is the first thing a visitor sees and the surface that takes the most shoes, grit and water of anywhere in the house. That argues for a flat, dense, hard-wearing construction rather than something soft, and for a pattern or a mottled colour rather than a pale plain, because a plain runner in an entrance shows every footprint.

One runner or two is a real question in a long hall. A single long runner reads calmer and is almost always the better answer. Two shorter ones end up misaligned within a week and the join draws the eye to exactly the spot you wanted to disguise.

If the hall opens into another room, stop the runner before the threshold rather than carrying it through. A clean break at the doorway makes both spaces read as rooms.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is the second home of the runner and the place it earns its keep daily.

The strip in front of the sink and the cupboards is where you stand longest and where the floor is hardest. A runner there is comfort before it is decoration. Along a kitchen island, a long runner also pulls the two halves of an open kitchen together, which a mat never does.

Choose a flatweave or a washable quality here, nothing with a deep pile. Water, grease and crumbs sit on top of a flat surface and brush off; a pile holds all three. And measure the door of the dishwasher and the oven before you settle on length, because a runner that fouls an opening door will annoy you every day.

The same logic applies in a laundry room, a pantry and a back hallway. If you want the full argument for what survives a floor like that, our kitchen rugs go into it.

Beside the Bed and at the Foot

The quietest use of a runner and the one people discover last.

A runner along one side of the bed gives you something warm to step onto without covering the whole floor, and it costs a fraction of a rug big enough to sit under the bed. Match its length to the mattress rather than the room: a runner that starts level with the pillows and ends level with the foot of the bed looks deliberate, one that runs the length of the wall does not.

A pair, one on each side, works beautifully in a symmetrical bedroom. And a single runner across the foot of the bed is the oldest trick in the book for a room where a large rug would be too much.

This is the one place where pile is allowed. Bare feet in the morning are the whole point, so soft wins over hard-wearing here.

Flatweave or Pile

The construction matters more in a runner than in any other format, because a corridor is the hardest floor in the house.

A flatweave has no pile to crush, nothing standing up to mat down, and nowhere for grit to settle. It stays flat under a door, it does not shed, and it takes a hundred passes a day without developing a path down the middle. A jacquard flatweave goes further and weaves the design into the structure, so it still looks drawn rather than printed after years of traffic. For a hallway or a kitchen this is simply the right answer.

A pile runner is softer underfoot and warmer to look at, and it belongs where people linger rather than pass. Beside a bed, along a dressing room, in a quiet landing. In a busy corridor a pile will develop a visible track within a year, and no amount of vacuuming brings it back.

If the runner is going somewhere that gets both, choose flat. You will notice the durability every day and the softness only occasionally.

Pattern in a Long Narrow Shape

A pattern behaves differently in a runner than in a rectangle, and it is worth knowing before you fall for a photograph.

A long narrow field cuts a large motif in half. Medallions, big florals and large-scale geometry are designed to be seen whole and a runner rarely gives them the room. What works instead is a pattern that repeats along the length: stripes, a small geometric repeat, a trailing stem, an all-over texture. The eye follows the repeat down the corridor, which is exactly the effect you want.

Direction matters here too. Anything that runs lengthways stretches the hall. Anything that runs across it will make a narrow corridor feel narrower still, so lay bands along the length rather than across it.

And a runner is the one place where a busy pattern is the practical choice, not the bold one. It hides what a hallway floor collects.

Non-Slip, Cleaning and Made to Measure

Three practical things that decide whether you still like the runner in a year.

On a hard floor, use an anti-slip underlay. A runner is narrow and light, and the length of it means every step pushes it a little further. An underlay stops the creeping, adds a little softness and takes some of the wear off the back of the rug. It is the cheapest thing on this page and the one that makes the most difference.

For cleaning, vacuum along the length rather than across it, and take a flatweave outside twice a year and beat it. A washable runner goes in the machine at 30 degrees, which is worth having in a kitchen or a family hallway.

And if the size you need does not exist, say so. Custom widths up to 400 cm and any length are possible in a large part of the collection, and a corridor with an awkward measurement is exactly the case made to measure exists for.

Order online with free EU delivery, or come and see us in our rug shop and showroom in Willebroek, in the Antwerp region, easily reached from Antwerp, Brussels, Mechelen and Sint-Niklaas. Bring the width and the length of the hallway and a photo of the floor. We will tell you which size to take and whether it needs to be made.
