How to Style Your Bedroom with the Perfect Rug | Size, Material & Placement Guide

Why a Rug Makes All the Difference in Your Bedroom

The bedroom is your personal sanctuary. And yet it's one of the most overlooked rooms when it comes to rugs. A well-chosen rug adds warmth underfoot on cold mornings, defines the sleeping zone, and ties your entire interior together. Whether you're drawn to a cosy Scandinavian feel or a clean, minimalist look, the right rug can genuinely transform a bedroom from functional to beautiful.

What Size Rug Do You Need?

Sizing is the most common mistake people make, and it's an easy one to avoid. In a larger bedroom, you want the rug to extend at least 60 to 70 cm on both sides of the bed and beyond the foot. This creates that luxurious, hotel-like feel. In a medium-sized room, placing the rug so it starts at the lower third of the bed and extends outward works beautifully. For a smaller bedroom or a single bed, two runners on either side or a smaller rug at the foot of the bed are both elegant solutions.

As a general rule: always measure your room and your bed before ordering, and leave at least 40 to 50 cm between the edge of the rug and the wall. It makes the space feel intentional rather than cramped.

Which Material Works Best in a Bedroom?

Comfort matters most here. Wool is our top recommendation. It's naturally soft, warm, and durable, and it regulates temperature beautifully through the seasons. A high-pile or shaggy rug is another favourite: stepping onto something plush first thing in the morning is a small luxury that adds up. If you're after a touch of elegance, viscose or silk-look rugs bring a subtle sheen that works well in low-traffic bedrooms. Cotton is a practical, affordable choice for guest rooms or children's rooms. And if you love texture, jute or natural fibres can work beautifully as a layering piece under a softer rug.

Where to Place the Rug

There are three classic approaches. The first is placing the rug fully under the bed, extending well beyond all sides. This looks grounded and generous, and it works best in larger rooms. The second, and most popular, is the two-thirds placement: the rug starts at the lower third of the bed and extends to the foot, anchoring the bed without overwhelming the space. The third option is a rug or runner placed horizontally at the foot of the bed. This is a great accent for smaller rooms or when you want to add a pop of colour or pattern without committing to a large piece.

Colour and Style

Your bedroom rug should complement your interior, not compete with it. Neutral tones like beige, cream, grey and taupe are timeless and make a room feel calm and spacious. Earth tones such as terracotta, rust and warm brown are very much on trend right now and bring a cosy, organic quality to a bedroom. If your room is mostly neutral, a patterned rug can be the one statement piece that brings everything to life. And if you prefer a more refined look, choosing a rug in the same colour family as your walls or bedding creates a sophisticated, layered effect.
