Wool is the reference material for quality rugs. No other fibre combines natural stain resistance, temperature regulation, long-term resilience and the ability to age gracefully in the way wool does. A well-made wool rug in a well-chosen space will still look considered after fifteen years. Most alternatives will not.

The reason is structural. Wool fibres have a natural crimp that allows them to spring back under compression. A wool rug placed under a sofa for a year does not flatten permanently. It recovers. The lanolin coating on the fibre, the same oil that protects a sheep's coat, creates a natural barrier against staining that no synthetic can replicate at the same level. Liquids bead on the surface rather than immediately absorbing, giving you time to blot and remove most spills before they set. Wool is also naturally flame-retardant and self-extinguishing, which is not a minor detail in a floor covering.

Three Constructions, Three Characters

There are three main ways to make a wool rug, and each produces a different character of surface and a different relationship with the space it occupies. A hand-knotted wool rug is the most labour-intensive construction: individual knots are tied by hand around the warp threads, one at a time, across the full width of the rug. The result is a construction without a backing layer, where the rug itself is the structure. Hand-knotted rugs age in a way no other construction achieves: the surface develops a sheen and a depth that increases over decades of use. Perletta's handwoven wool rugs, produced in Morocco from New Zealand wool, are made on this principle. A hand-tufted wool rug is produced by pushing strands of wool into a pre-stretched canvas using a tufting gun, then securing the pile with a latex backing. The process is skilled and the result is dense, high-quality and tactilely rich. Brink & Campman, Sanderson and Morris & Co produce handtufted wool rugs in collections that treat the rug as a design object rather than a floor accessory. A handwoven wool rug, as produced by Layered and by the weavers behind Perletta, involves interlacing fibres on a loom without a backing structure. The result is a flat or low-pile surface with exceptional depth and a character that changes under different light conditions.

Wool and Underfloor Heating

Wool works well with underfloor heating, with one condition: pile height matters. Short-pile and flatwoven wool constructions allow heat to transfer efficiently without significant insulation loss. For thicker, higher-pile wool rugs, the tog rating becomes relevant: a rating below 1.5 to 2.5 is generally recommended to avoid blocking the heating system. Wool's natural heat conductivity means it releases warmth steadily rather than trapping it. As a rule, leaving part of the heated floor exposed allows the system to breathe more effectively. All of the wool rugs in our collection carry clear guidance on underfloor heating compatibility in their product specifications.

Care and Maintenance

Initial shedding is normal in any new wool rug, particularly in handtufted constructions. It is not a defect. Wool fibres that are not fully integrated during production loosen with early use and are removed through vacuuming. This stops after a few weeks. For ongoing care: vacuum regularly using suction only, without a rotating beater bar, which can pull and distort wool pile. Blot liquid spills immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth; do not rub. For deeper cleaning, a professional wool-safe treatment every two to five years is sufficient for most domestic settings. Rotating the rug every six to twelve months balances wear and exposure to light, particularly in rooms with direct sunlight.

The Wool Rug Collection

Perletta for handwoven New Zealand wool, made to order in any dimension. Brink & Campman for handtufted wool collections with a strong design identity. Sanderson and Morris & Co for handtufted heritage patterns from British design archives. Layered for handwoven wool and recycled material combinations with a Scandinavian precision. Marimekko for Finnish graphic design in handtufted wool construction. The collection spans every price point from accessible entry-level quality to investment-grade pieces that will outlast several changes of interior.

The living room is the most common placement for a wool rug, where its combination of resilience and comfort is most clearly expressed. The bedroom benefits from wool's temperature-regulating quality and its softness underfoot. For hallways and dining rooms, short-pile and flatwoven wool constructions offer the durability of the material without the maintenance considerations of a higher pile.

We display the wool collection in our rug shop and showroom in Willebroek, in the Antwerp region, easily accessible from Antwerp, Brussels, Mechelen and Sint-Niklaas. Feeling the difference between a handknotted, a handtufted and a handwoven wool surface in person is worth the visit. Free EU delivery on all orders, with a 30-day return policy on the standard collection.
