Anyone searching for a luxury rug online will find two very different things. The first: velvet and high-pile rugs with a glossy appearance and a price that is easier than expected. The second: rugs that are handmade from natural materials by craftspeople with generations of knowledge, and that will still be worth something in twenty years. This page is the second.

Buying a handmade rug is a different decision from buying a rug that looks luxurious. It is not about pile height or the sheen of the yarn. It is about what is inside the rug: how it is woven, what it is made from and how it responds to years of use. Wool does not flatten permanently under furniture. A handwoven construction does not delaminate. Natural dyes develop a patina rather than fading. Calculated over ten or twenty years, a well-chosen handmade rug costs less than the cycle of replacing a cheap alternative.

Handwoven, Hand-Tufted and Hand-Knotted

The handmade range at Onlinetapijten.be is built around three construction types. Handwoven rugs are made entirely on a loom, with the pattern integrated into the weave itself. Perletta weaves every rug to order in Morocco, in pure wool, in any size required. Layered from Stockholm produces its Röllakan and Solid Wool collections by hand in small workshops in India, in a flatwoven construction that is particularly well suited to underfloor heating. Hand-tufted rugs are produced by hand-punching pile yarn through a backing cloth and finishing with a secondary backing. Brink & Campman, active for over a century, produces in pure wool at a density that sets their output apart. Layered's Swedish Homage and Teklan collections are also hand-tufted in wool, with a pile depth suited to larger rooms.

Hand-Knotted: Tapison Home

The Tapison Home Shall collection is hand-knotted in Afghan wool. Every knot is tied individually by hand around the warp threads: a 200 by 300 cm rug contains hundreds of thousands of knots and takes months to complete. Each piece is genuinely one of a kind, not as a marketing phrase but as a factual description. The same design will never produce an identical result because no two hands work identically. The Tapison Home Kilim collection is handwoven flatweave in Afghan wool, with a character that similarly varies from piece to piece.

Louis de Poortere: Belgian Design

Louis de Poortere is a Belgian brand founded in 1858 with an entirely machine-woven range. What distinguishes it from the mass market is the quality of its design and the coherence of its collections. From the Fading World series with its fading vintage patterns to the licensed Morris & Co botanical collections, Louis de Poortere brings interior-relevant design at a construction level that is broadly accessible without compromising on content.

Handmade Outdoor Rugs

Not all luxury outdoor rugs are the same. The low end of the market uses polypropylene that fades and hardens within a season. Brink & Campman and its associated brands produce outdoor rugs in handwoven recycled PET constructions, with the same production standards as their indoor range. The pile is consistent, the design is considered and the construction holds up under real weather conditions.

Exclusively in Our Showroom

Two brands available in the Rugsman BV showroom in Willebroek cannot be ordered online. Ora Pro Nobis produces hand-tufted rugs in its own workshop in Stekene, Belgium, with the official Handmade in Belgium label. It is one of the only producers in the country where the entire process, from yarn to finished rug, takes place on Belgian soil. Longbarn from the Netherlands works in materials rarely found in standard rug retail: Belgian linen, mohair, silk and wool blends, space-dyed wool and TENCEL from eucalyptus fibres. For buyers looking for something that does not appear in any online catalogue, the showroom is where to start.

Custom sizing is available through Perletta and select Brink & Campman collections for rooms where standard formats do not fit. The full range of wool rugs is available to browse and order online.

The full luxury rug collection is available to explore in our rug shop and showroom in Willebroek, in the Antwerp region, easily accessible from Antwerp, Brussels, Mechelen and Sint-Niklaas. Free EU delivery on all orders.
