Green is not a single decision. Olive, sage, moss, forest, emerald, mint: each reads differently in a room, behaves differently in light and suits different furniture, floors and interior styles. The question is never simply whether to choose green, but which green, and in what kind of construction. This page works through both.

The three most searched shades are olive, sage and dark green. Olive is the warmest, with a yellow-brown undertone that sits comfortably alongside wood, linen, terracotta and warm metals. It works in almost every interior style from Japandi to Mediterranean and is the reason it has become the most consistent green choice in premium rug buying. Sage is quieter: grey-green rather than yellow-green, suited to paler and more minimal interiors where you want colour without weight. Dark green, forest and emerald sit at the other end: they have presence, they pair with brass and dark wood and they make a room feel finished rather than decorated. Mint and lighter greens work better in bedrooms and secondary rooms than in main living spaces, where they can feel too cool under evening light.

Botanical Green: Morris & Co, Scion, Harlequin, Sanderson, Orla Kiely and Laura Ashley

The botanical tradition in rug design goes back to William Morris, the Victorian designer who in the 1860s established the visual language that still defines how pattern draws from the natural world. Morris & Co carries that legacy directly: Acanthus, Bower, Bluebell and Bird all bring dense botanical illustration into flatwoven and hand-tufted constructions, with greens that range from deep forest to lighter vine. Scion approaches the same nature-referencing tradition with a younger, more graphic energy: bold outline, clean contrast and a palette that works confidently in contemporary interiors. Harlequin works in a bolder register still, with Elliptic in Emerald among the strongest single-colour botanical statements in the current premium market. Sanderson's Forest Green collections, Robin's Wood and Ancient Canopy, treat botanical pattern with the restraint of a heritage brand that has been doing this for over a century. Orla Kiely takes a different route: Linear Stem and Sycamore Dill use the geometric reduction of a botanical motif rather than its literal reproduction, resulting in a pattern that is immediately recognisable but entirely modern. Laura Ashley's Fern collections bring an English country garden sensibility in tones that sit closest to the softer, greyer end of the olive-to-sage spectrum.

Plain Olive Green: Perletta

Plain green done well is harder to find than patterned green. The market is full of solid green rugs in synthetic pile that photograph well and flatten within a year. Perletta is the opposite: handwoven in pure wool to order in Morocco, in constructions including Limone, Bellamy and Finesse that have enough surface variation to hold visual interest without ever resorting to pattern. Olive 448 is the most-requested green colourway in the Perletta range: warm, deep and consistent under both daylight and artificial light. Marimekko's Unikko design in Dark Green is a different kind of green entirely: graphic, confident and Scandinavian in a way that has nothing to do with the British botanical tradition. It belongs in rooms with strong design decisions already in place, where the rug complements a wider visual argument rather than starting one. Louis de Poortere's Meditation Drop Green moves in a tonal direction: colour transitions from a richer forest centre to a softer, almost misty edge that creates movement without pattern. For Scandinavian or minimalist interiors that want green as atmosphere rather than statement, the LdP Meditation and Structures Baobab Perrier's Green are the most considered options at their price point.
