Collection: 300x400 cm Rugs

At 300 x 400 cm a rug stops being something in a room and becomes the floor of it. Twelve square metres is enough to carry a full seating group with every leg on it, to sit under a table for eight, or to give an open-plan space the one thing it usually lacks: a centre.

It is the size that makes a large room feel finished, and the moment a space stops looking under-furnished.

The Room a 300 x 400 Is Made For

A rug this size wants a room of roughly 400 x 500 cm or more, which leaves about 50 cm of floor visible on every side.

That border matters more here than at any smaller size. A 300 x 400 that runs close to the skirting reads as wall-to-wall carpet rather than as a rug, and the whole point of choosing one is the opposite.

The good news is that in a room of this size almost nothing else works. A 250 x 350 in a large open living space always looks like it is floating, and going smaller again only makes the room feel bigger and emptier.

Open-Plan Living

This is where a rug this size earns everything it costs.

In an open-plan space there are no walls to tell you where the living room ends and the kitchen or dining area begins. A 300 x 400 does that job. Laid under the seating, it draws a line around the sitting area that the eye accepts immediately, and the rest of the space reorganises itself around it.

Here you can put the furniture fully on the rug rather than front legs only. A sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table all standing on it is the most convincing arrangement there is, and 300 x 400 is the first size that allows it without compromise.

If the space also holds a dining table, consider two rugs rather than one enormous one. A 300 x 400 under the seating and a second under the table reads as two rooms, which is usually what an open plan needs.

Under a Large Dining Table

The measurement here is the same as at any size, and at this scale it finally allows a serious table.

Allow 60 cm of rug beyond the table on every side so a chair can push back and sit down again with all four legs still on the rug. A 300 x 400 therefore takes a table of up to about 280 x 100 cm, which is eight to ten places.

Choose a flatweave or a low construction. At this size that is also the practical choice for another reason: a large flat rug lies quietly under a heavy table and does not need moving to clean under it.

What a Rug This Size Is Made Of

At twelve square metres the construction is what you live with, and this size has its own strengths.

Wool is the backbone of the collection here, much of it handwoven. A wide handwoven wool rug is made in one piece on a broad loom, which gives it an even, quiet surface across the whole span and a weight that keeps it flat in a big room. It is the most satisfying floor a large space can have.

Belgian flatweaves in recycled fibre are the other great answer at this scale. Woven wide in one piece, hard-wearing enough for an open-plan floor that takes everything a household throws at it, and a number of them lie just as happily on a covered terrace as indoors.

And if you want hand-tufted wool at this size, in a colour and a design of your choosing, it is made to order. That is the route worth taking here, and it is more straightforward than most people assume.

280 x 380 and 280 x 390 Are the Same Rug

Half the rugs on this page carry one of those measurements, and there is no reason to rule them out.

Mills weave to their own widths, so a range that finishes at 280 x 390 is simply a different loom, not a smaller rug in any way you will notice. Twenty centimetres across four metres disappears entirely once the furniture is on it.

The only case where it matters is a room where you have measured to the centimetre, and if you are that tight, a made-to-measure rug is the better answer anyway.

Colour and Pattern at This Scale

A rug this size is the largest single surface in the room, so it sets the tone rather than joining it.

This is where large-scale pattern finally has the room it was drawn for. A big geometric, a large floral or a sweeping abstract that would be cut in half at 160 x 230 can be seen whole here, and that is a real pleasure.

Tonal and mottled colour works just as well and is the safer long-term choice in a room you live in every day. A mottled or gently variegated surface also hides the traffic of an open-plan floor in a way that a flat solid colour never does.

A small fine repeat behaves differently again: over twelve square metres it reads as texture rather than pattern, which is its own kind of luxury in a room this size.

When Made to Measure Is the Better Answer

At this size, more often than at any other.

Large rooms are rarely standard. A living room of 420 x 560, an L-shaped open plan, a space with a structural column in it: none of those are served well by a rectangle that happens to come in 300 x 400. A large part of the collection is available made to measure in any width up to 400 cm and any length.

And if the room turns out to be smaller than you thought, 200 x 300 is the size below, or a 250 x 350 in between. Measure before you fall in love with something, because at this scale the difference between right and almost right is very visible.
