Collection: 250x350 cm Rugs

Between a rug that sits in front of the sofa and one that covers the whole floor sits 250 x 350 cm. Eight and a half square metres is enough to carry a three-seater with an armchair on either side, enough to put a table for six on with room to pull a chair back, and still enough floor left around it that the room breathes.

It is the size most people mean when they say they want a big rug, and more than half of the collection comes in it.

250 x 350 and 240 x 340 Are the Same Size

Worth knowing before you start choosing, because you will find both measurements here.

Ten centimetres in the width and ten in the length is the whole difference, and on a floor with furniture standing on it nobody sees it. Which measurement a rug carries depends on the mill: Belgian and Dutch woven ranges usually finish at 240 x 340, handmade ranges from India at 250 x 350, and a few names make both.

So search on one and choose from both. If you have measured a spot where a 250 x 350 fits, a 240 x 340 fits it too. The ten centimetres only count against a wall or a door opening, and then you already know which side of it you are on.

The same goes for 250 x 300, 240 x 330 and 240 x 300, which sit a little shorter and behave exactly the same way in a room.

A Living Room with a Three-Seater

This is the size at which a seating group finally reads as one thing rather than as separate pieces.

Lay it with the 350 cm side running parallel to the sofa and put the front legs of everything on it: the three-seater, an armchair on either side, the coffee table in the middle. The rug closes the circle, and the furniture stops looking like it was pushed against the walls.

If the room allows it, the more generous version is better still. Pull the whole arrangement forward and let the sofa stand fully on the rug. At 250 x 350 that is possible in most living rooms, and it is the one move that makes a room look designed rather than furnished.

Leave 40 to 50 cm of floor visible between the rug and the walls. That border is what makes a rug read as a rug, and at this size you have the room for it.

Under a Table for Six

Here the measurement does the arguing for you.

Allow 60 cm of rug beyond the table on every side, so a chair can push back and sit down again with all four legs still on the rug. That puts a 250 x 350 under a table of up to roughly 230 x 130 cm, which is six comfortable places and eight when you need them.

That is the most common dining table there is, which makes this the size to choose for a dining room. It is also why so many of these rugs end up carrying a table rather than a sofa.

Choose a flatweave or a low pile underneath one. Chairs slide over it instead of catching, it stays flat under the weight of a table, and the surface keeps its looks with daily use.

At the Foot of a Large Bed

A bedroom is the other room this size was made for, and here it is the width that does the work.

Laid across the foot of a bed of 180 or 200 cm wide, with the short side against the bed, a 250 x 350 runs well past the mattress on both sides and covers exactly the floor you step onto in the morning. Under a bed that wide, this is the first size that keeps the proportions right.

The other arrangement is to centre the bed on the rug completely, so it rises out of a field of wool with a soft margin on three sides. In a large bedroom that is the most luxurious thing you can do with a floor, and 250 x 350 is where it becomes possible.

A bedroom takes almost no traffic, so choose on feel here. Deep wool pile is never better than it is under bare feet first thing in the morning, and this is the one room where the softest thing you can find is also the sensible choice.

What a Rug This Size Is Made Of

At eight and a half square metres the construction is what you live with, and every construction we sell exists in this size.

Wool leads, and a large part of it is made by hand. Hand-tufted wool gives depth, weight and colour that holds for years, and it is the most generous surface there is underfoot at this scale. Handwoven and flatwoven pieces lie lower and feel firmer, and those are the rugs for a dining area or a room that is in use all day.

Alongside them are Belgian flatweaves in recycled fibre that take everything a household gives them, a good number of which lie just as happily on a covered terrace as indoors, and soft modern piles for a bedroom.

Whatever room you have in mind, there is a construction in this size to suit it.

Colour and Pattern at This Size

At 250 x 350 a rug is the largest single surface in most rooms, so it sets the tone rather than joining it.

This is where a large-scale pattern has the space it was drawn for. A generous geometric, a full floral or a sweeping abstract can be seen whole here instead of cropped, and that is a real pleasure.

Tonal and mottled colour is the easier thing to live with day after day, and it hides the traffic of a family room in a way that a flat solid colour never does. Ivory, sand, soft grey and oatmeal push the walls outward. Deep green, indigo and terracotta draw the room inward and make it feel enclosed. Both are right, they simply do opposite things, so decide which one you are after before you settle on a colour.

Pile height works the same way. A low pile keeps a room light and is the choice over underfloor heating or beneath heavy furniture. A high pile brings warmth and quiet, and belongs where comfort comes first.

When Another Size Fits Better

Three situations where a different size is the better rug.

Step down to 200 x 300 if the seating is a two-seater or a compact corner, if the dining table seats four, or if the room measures much under 350 x 450 cm. In a smaller room the border around the rug closes up, and the border is what you want to keep.

Step up to 300 x 400 for an open-plan space where the whole seating group stands on the rug, or for a dining table of eight to ten places. In a large open room that size holds the floor with more authority.

And if the room falls between two sizes, have it made. A large part of the collection is available made to measure in any width up to 400 cm and any length, which is the answer for a long narrow living room or a bedroom with an awkward corner.
