A galley kitchen. The floor beside a single bed. A two-seater in a city apartment. The strip in front of a bookcase. 140 x 200 cm goes where the large formats cannot, and it does more different jobs in a house than any other measurement we sell.

Just under three square metres, and the most useful three square metres in the collection.

140 x 200 and 135 x 200 Are the Same Size

You will find several measurements close together on this page, and in a room they behave as one.

140 x 200 is the standard. 135 x 200 is five centimetres narrower. 133 x 195 comes off a different loom again. On a floor there is nothing between them. Woven ranges and handmade ranges each work to their own widths, so the number on the label follows the loom rather than the room.

120 x 180, 125 x 180, 130 x 190 and 150 x 200 sit alongside them here for the same reason. If you have measured a space for a 140 x 200, any of these will sit in it.

The one case where the difference counts is a gap measured to the centimetre, between a kitchen island and the units for instance. There, take the smaller of the two and keep the margin.

A Compact Living Room or a Two-Seater

In a smaller living room this size does the work a big rug does in a big one.

In front of a two-seater, laid with the 200 cm side parallel to the sofa and the front legs standing on it, it pulls the sofa and the coffee table into one group. That is the arrangement this size was made for, and in an apartment or a smaller house it is exactly right.

With a larger sofa it plays a different part. Then it lies between the sofa and the coffee table as a defined surface, warm underfoot, without pretending to carry the whole arrangement. Plenty of people choose it that way deliberately, because it leaves more floor visible and a compact room looks wider for it.

The Bedroom

Three arrangements here, and all three are good.

Along one side of a double bed it becomes a warm strip to step onto and leaves the rest of the floor clear. In a narrow bedroom that reads better than a rug trying to frame the bed.

At the foot of a bed 140 cm wide, with the long side against the bed, it runs the full width of the mattress and a little past it on both sides.

In a single bedroom or a child's room it can be the main rug, laid in the open floor where the dressing and the playing happen.

A bedroom takes almost no traffic, so choose on feel. Deep wool pile is at its best here, and this is the one room where the softest thing you can find is also the sensible choice.

The Kitchen

This is the size a kitchen actually takes, and more of these rugs end up there than anywhere else.

Laid along a worktop run it covers the standing space where you cook, which is the hardest-working stretch of floor in the house. In front of a sink or a hob it covers the full working length without reaching into the walkway behind you.

Under a small kitchen table it works as well, with two or four chairs and a table top of about 80 x 80 cm.

For a kitchen, choose a flatweave or a low pile, ideally in a mottled colour, and washable if you cook seriously. A mottled surface hides what a kitchen floor collects between cleans in a way a flat solid colour never will.

What a Rug This Size Is Made Of

Every construction we sell exists in this size, and two of them are better represented here than anywhere else in the range.

Wool leads, much of it hand-tufted. At this size hand-tufted wool is the most rewarding thing you can put on a floor you cross every day, and the colour holds for years.

Washable rugs are the other. A good share of every washable rug we stock comes in this size, which is no accident: this is the size that goes in a kitchen, a hallway or a child's room, and those are the floors that want washing.

Alongside those are Belgian flatweaves in recycled fibre for a hard-working floor, a number of which lie just as happily on a balcony or a covered terrace, and soft modern piles for a bedroom.

Colour and Pattern at This Size

A rug of this size is an accent rather than the floor of the room, and that changes what you can do with it.

This is where you can be braver. A strong colour, a bold pattern or something you simply fell in love with is a manageable choice at 140 x 200 in a way it is not at three metres. If you have ever wanted a deep red, a full floral or a graphic black and white, this is the size to do it in.

The quieter route works just as well. Ivory, sand and soft grey make a compact room feel wider, and a tonal or mottled surface is the practical answer in a kitchen or a hallway.

Pile height follows the room. Low pile for a kitchen, a hallway or over underfloor heating. High pile for a bedroom. At this size it is easy to have both in the same house.

When 160 x 230 or a Runner Fits Better

Two situations where a different size or a different shape is the better rug.

Go to 160 x 230 if the sofa is a three-seater, if the bed is 160 cm or wider and you want the rug to frame it, or if the room is big enough that a 140 x 200 would sit small in the middle of it. When you are between the two, take the larger one.

Choose a runner instead if the space is long and narrow. A hallway, the strip between a kitchen island and the units, the side of a bed in a tight bedroom: in all of those a 140 x 200 is the wrong shape rather than the wrong size, and a runner solves it properly.
