In December, Pantone traditionally announces the trend colour for the coming year. According to the well-known colour institute, you will fall like a log for Viva Magenta (18-1750) in 2023. The colour of the year is a descendant of the red family, inspired by the cochineal. Or: the scarlet louse. That minuscule creature is ground and processed into raw material to colour cosmetics, food products and textiles, among other things. Viva Magenta is a dark shade of crimson (magenta), somewhere between pink, red and purple. An exuberant, optimistic and slightly rebellious colour - cut out to brighten up your interiors.
Why this brave and joyful trend colour? In an age where technology reigns supreme, people like to reach back to nature and 'authenticity'. The vibrant red of cochineal symbolises the power of nature. You make a statement with it: expressive, lively and fearless.
Admittedly, magenta is a colour for daredevils. You don't have to immerse your entire wardrobe or furnishings in Viva Magenta right away. With a few accessories or a rug in magenta - or a derivative - you can give your interior a striking makeover.
Get inspired by rugs with a dash of red.
Think the colour of the year is a bit too bright? Rest assured, softer colours are also popping up in 2023. These too pay tribute to nature and create a happy atmosphere. Check out these two trending colours:
- Ochre yellow - a fresh, harmonious colour that pairs beautifully with greens and neutral earth tones.
- Vining Ivy (Histor) - a colour midway between powerful blue and emerald green. Rich when combined with warm tones; elegant when mixed with cool colours.
Bring sunshine into your interior with an (ochre) yellow carpet.
Influential organisations decide which colour is next. The Pantone Colour Institute is the best-known and most important. But paint manufacturers and trend agencies also help determine the direction. The colours you see on the catwalk also tip the scales.
In fact, it goes even wider: the car industry, the art world and general social trends have an impact on the popularity of colours.
Manufacturers know the colour of the year faster than you do: they are ahead of the game thanks to information from trend agencies. At trade fairs such as Maison & Object, the latest interior trends are compiled. Then they seep into all interior collections. But in a way that suits what you as a consumer taste. Chances are small that you will give all your walls a coat of Viva Magenta. But you might consider accent walls or decorative items such as cushions and rugs in the striking crimson.
